...There are roughly the following casting techniques for metal casting. (1) Stone mold casting This is a technique in which the object to be cast is engraved into sandstone-like stone and molten metal is poured into it. Ancient bronze swords, bronze spears, and bronze halberds were made using stone molds. Stone molds for bronze bells have been excavated from Nagoyama in Himeji City (fragments), Kamitakano in Ako City (fragments), and Higashi-Nara in Osaka Prefecture (half of a bronze bell). As many of these are old-style bronze bells, it is believed that stone molds were used in the early stages of bronze bell casting, and that clay molds came to be used in later periods. ...
