A general term for the moss genus Jungermannia in the Jungermanaceae family. There are about 200 species worldwide, of which about 30 are in Japan. They grow on moist soil, on rocks, or in water. The leaves are entire, overlapping in two rows on the stem like a tile, and have no ventral leaves. The perianth has a narrow mouth and is bud-like. J. infusca (Mitt.) Steph. is commonly found in various places south of Honshu, where it grows in colonies on cliffs and banks. J. vulcanicola (Schiffn.) Steph. is often found near hot springs, forming large yellow-green to reddish-brown colonies in sulfurous water. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
