Alberti, Leon Battista

Japanese: アルベルティ(英語表記)Alberti, Leon Battista
Alberti, Leon Battista
Born: February 14, 1404, Genoa
Died April 25, 1472. An Italian architect and humanist in Rome. He was described as a "jack of all trades" with a thorough knowledge of all arts. He was born as the illegitimate son of a wealthy exiled Florentine merchant. He studied law and classics in Padua and Bologna, and returned to Florence around 1428, throwing himself into the midst of the Renaissance art movement. While working as a secretary for the Papal Court, he wrote Della pittura (1436), and in the 1440s he began writing De re aedificatoria (De architecture), modelled on Marcus Vitruvius' Ten Treatises on Architecture. This book had a wide influence on later generations, including on architecture as a civic activity, including urban planning, and the use of classical orders. Examples of architecture include the Palazzo Rucellai in Florence (c. 1445-70), the façade of Santa Maria Novella (c. 1456-70), the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini (c. 1446-50), the Basilica of San Sebastiano in Mantua (1460-70), and the Basilica of Sant'Andrea (c. 1470).
