An evergreen or semi-deciduous small shrub of the Solanaceae family (APG classification: Solanaceae). It is 1-1.5 meters tall, well-branched, and has green twigs. The leaves are alternate, oblong or lanceolate, 5-10 cm long, rounded at the tip and narrowing at the base, with wavy edges and glossy surfaces. From July to September, one to several white flowers bloom opposite the leaves. The corolla is cup-shaped with five lobes, 1-1.5 cm in diameter, and the lobes are broad lanceolate and open flat. The berries are spherical and about 1.2 cm in diameter, ripen to a beautiful bright red in November, and remain on the tree for a long time after maturity. The name comes from the resemblance of the fruit to coral, and it is also known as Tamasango. Native to Brazil, it was introduced to Japan in the mid-Meiji period. There are varieties with orange fruits and dwarf varieties. They are grown in pots for decoration and as cut flowers. They are propagated by cuttings.

ナス科（APG分類：ナス科）の常緑または半落葉の小低木。高さ1～1.5メートル、よく枝分れし、小枝は緑色。葉は互生し、長楕円(ちょうだえん)形または披針(ひしん)形で長さ5～10センチメートル、先は丸みを帯びて基部は狭まり、縁(へり)は波状、表面は光沢がある。7～9月、葉と対生して、1～数個の白色花を開く。花冠は杯(さかずき)状で5中裂し、径1～1.5センチメートル、裂片は広披針形で平開する。液果は球形で径約1.2センチメートル、11月ころ鮮紅色に熟して美しく、成熟したのちも樹上に長く残る。名は、この果実をサンゴに見立てたもので、別名タマサンゴともいう。ブラジル原産で、明治中期に渡来した。品種に果実が橙(だいだい)色のものや矮性(わいせい)のものがある。鉢植えにして観賞するほか、切り花用にもする。繁殖は挿芽による。
