Chesterfield

A city in the northeast of Derbyshire, central England. Together with the surrounding area, it forms the Chesterfield district. It is located about 60 km southeast of Manchester, at the confluence of the River Lowther and the River Hipper. It was granted a royal charter as a free city in 1204. It is a mining and industrial city at the eastern foot of the southern Pennines. After the construction of canals and railways, it became industrialized, and prospered thanks to the coal and iron ore mined nearby. It is known as the site of an ancient battle where the Parliamentarians were defeated during the Puritan Revolution in the mid-17th century. It is the death place of George Stephenson, founder of the railways, and Tapton House, where he lived, still stands, and his body is buried in Holy Trinity Cathedral. District area: 66 ^km2 . District population: 98,852 (2001). City population: 70,260 (2001).

イギリス，イングランド中部，ダービーシャー県北東部の都市。周辺を含めてチェスターフィールド地区を構成する。マンチェスターの南東約 60km，ローザー川とヒッパー川の合流点に位置する。1204年自由都市として勅許を受けた。ペナイン山脈南部の東麓にある鉱工業都市で，運河と鉄道が建設されてから工業化が進み，付近から産出される石炭，鉄鉱石で栄えた。17世紀半ばの清教徒革命時，議会派が敗北を喫した古戦場として知られる。鉄道の創始者ジョージ・スチーブンソンの没地で，生前に住んでいたタプトンハウスが現存し，遺体はホーリー・トリニティ聖堂に埋葬されている。地区面積 66km²。地区人口 9万8852（2001）。都市人口 7万260（2001）。
