Danrin Haikai

Japanese:
Danrin Haikai
A school of haiku poetry from the Edo period, and its style. It arose in reaction to the traditional Teimon haikai, and was popular mainly in the 1670s (Enpo period), but it was a transitional style of haiku that rapidly declined with the rise of Sho-style haikai. People who were dissatisfied with the lukewarm haiku style and strict etiquette of the Teimon haikai enjoyed the liberating and playful style of haiku as a side activity to renga. The school was led by Nishiyama Soin, the master of the renga sho (linked verse) at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, and was called the Soin school, or Baio school after his haiku name. Danrin was originally a school for monks, and was first named by the Shoi school in Edo, but later became a general term for the various schools of haiku under Soin.
