Euplectella imperialis (English spelling)

...Seawater enters through the eyes in the body wall and exits through the lid at the top, capturing and digesting the tiny plankton that enters with the seawater. There are three species in the waters near Japan: Euplectella imperialis (illustration), E. marshalli , and E. oweni . It is said that in Europe, the imperial sponge was thought to be an elaborately crafted product made by the Chinese.
