Shibushi [town] - Shibushi

Japanese: 志布志[町] - しぶし
Shibushi [town] - Shibushi
An old town in Soo District, eastern Kagoshima Prefecture. The main settlement facing Shibushi Bay was a port town that prospered in the early modern period through domestic and international trade, and is served by the Nichinan Line. The town's main industries are agriculture, centered on sweet potatoes and tobacco, cattle and pig livestock, and fishing, but an industrial complex has been developed and companies are moving in. Livistoa leaf products are a specialty of the town. The coast is included in the Nichinan Coast Quasi-National Park, and Birou Island is located in the bay. In January 2006, the town merged with Matsuyama Town and Ariake Town in Soo District to become a city, Shibushi City. Area: 141.59 km2 . Population: 18,801 (2003).
