The capital of Tambov Oblast in western Russia. It lies about 400 km southeast of Moscow, overlooking the Tuna River, a part of the Oka River system. It was built in 1636 as a fortress on the Belgorod defense line. After the Moscow-Saratov railway was opened in the late 19th century, it developed into a distribution center for agricultural products. Currently, there are factories producing machinery (chemical industry equipment, agricultural machinery parts), chemicals (dyes, rubber), and food. There is also the Chemical Machinery Manufacturing University and the Pedagogical University. It is a junction of railways and highways. Population: 280,457 (2010).
