Discovery method

Japanese: 発見法 - はっけんほう

A translation of the word heuristics, it refers to a way of thinking or technique that contributes to discovery. There are four layers of discovery: discovery of facts, discovery of concepts, discovery of laws, and discovery of theories. Of these, discovery of facts often involves the intervention of chance elements, such as the discovery of X-rays by X-rays. In contrast, discovery of concepts is often inseparable from the discovery of theories about them, such as the concepts of gravity and electrons. Therefore, discovery methods are usually used mainly to describe the discovery of laws and theories.

ヒューリスティックスheuristicsの訳語で，〈発見〉に資する思考法ないし技法をいう。発見には，〈事実の発見〉と〈概念の発見〉と〈法則の発見〉と〈理論の発見〉の四つの層が区別される。このうち〈事実の発見〉は，レントゲンによるX線の発見などのように偶然の要素が介入することも多い。これに対し，〈概念の発見〉は，たとえば重力や電子の概念のように，それについての理論の発見と相即的であることが多い。そこで通常〈発見法〉は，主として法則や理論の発見についていわれる。
