Protectorate - Shugoryo

Japanese: 守護領 - しゅごりょう

The direct territories and positions of the Shugo during the Kamakura, Nanboku-cho and Muromachi periods. A well-known example from the Kamakura period is that of Aki Shugo Fujiwara Chikazane, who was recognized by the shogunate in 1235 (Kasei 1). These consisted of the provincial office and the district land steward position in the surrounding area, the Kono-Kobe position (with authority to control and command the provincial government officials), the Gion Jinjin Kono-Kobe position (with authority to control the Gion Shrine Jinjin who were involved in transportation and commercial activities), and the Hisatakena (pseudonyms for the major provincial government officials) that were widely distributed throughout the country, and these were a continuation of the systems of the previous Shugo Takeda Nobumitsu and then Munetaka Takachika.

鎌倉･南北朝･室町時代の守護の直轄所領･所職。鎌倉時代のものとしては1235年(嘉禎1)に幕府が認めた安芸守護藤原親実の例が著名である。それは国府ならびに同近辺の郡地頭職，在庁兄部（このこうべ）職(国衙在庁官人の支配･指揮権をもつ)，祇園神人兄部職(交通･商業活動を行う祇園社神人の支配権をもつ)，国内に広く分布する久武名(有勢な国衙在庁の仮名)などから成っており，これらは前守護武田信光さらに宗孝親の体制を継承したものであった。
