...an ethnic group in Central Asia. In Western sources they are called Ephtalitai or Hayāṭila, and in Chinese sources they are called Huan-da. From the middle of the 5th century until their division into the Turks and the Sassanid Empire (558-561), they prospered in the Hindu Kush mountain range, a strategic location on the trade route connecting India, southern Russia, China, and Persia, and built a powerful nation that combined nomadic and urban life.
