Cush; Kush

Cush; Kush
Also called Kush. The ancient Egyptians called what is now Sudan. The ancient Greeks called it Ethiopia. Around 2000 BCE, it was the area south of the second cataract of the Nile, but soon came to refer to the whole of Nubia. It was often under the control of ancient Egypt, but the Kushite dynasty also emerged, which ruled Egypt. Gold, spices, ebony, ostrich feathers, furs and other specialties were brought to Egypt. The Jews believe that the ancestor of the people of this region was Cush, the eldest son of Ham, Noah's second son. The Septuagint and Vulgate refer to the "land of Cush," but its exact location is merely a guess.
