Blue Nile [River] - Aonile

Japanese: 青ナイル[川] - あおナイル

A tributary of the Nile. It originates from Lake Tana in Ethiopia, flows south through the Abyssinian Plateau, then flows west, enters Sudan, flows north, and joins the Nile (White Nile) in Khartoum. Its total length is 1,450 km. Its name comes from the clear blue color of its water, which is different from the grayish white color of the White Nile. In Amharic, it is called "Abbai." In Sudan, dams have been built upstream and large-scale agricultural development is being carried out.

ナイル川の支流。エチオピアのタナ湖に発しアビシニア高原を南流，ついで西流し，スーダンにはいって北流，ハルツームでナイル川（白ナイル）に合流。全長1450km。白ナイルの灰白色の水に対し，水が澄んだ青色に見えるのでこの名がある。アムハラ語では〈アバイAbbai〉という。スーダンでは上流にダムを築いて大規模な農業開発が行われている。
