A mining town in the eastern part of Bihar state in northeastern India. It is located about 246 km northwest of Kolkata (Calcutta), on the eastern edge of the Chotanagpur Plateau, and in the eastern part of the Jharia coalfield, the largest coalfield in India. A dam was completed as part of a comprehensive development plan for the Damodar River in the south, and machinery and chemical industries have developed in the surrounding area. It is a distribution center for agricultural products such as rice, corn, and seeds for oil extraction. It is home to the School of Mines, which is affiliated with Bihar University, and the Central Fuel Research Institute. Population: 198,963 (2001).
