When a certain ethnic group or country is colonized, the ruling power introduces an education system designed to assimilate them into the mother country's order and culture and to instill in them a sense of dependency on the mother country for life. However, from the perspective of the colonized people, this was nothing more than a series of anti-educational systems in which their right to an education was taken away and they were forced to adopt the education of the ruling mother country and make it their own. During the so-called era of imperialism from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, countries such as Britain, France, Germany, the United States, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, and Japan divided up Asia, Africa, and Latin America and ruled them as colonies.
