Izumi-ryu

Japanese:
Izumi-ryu

A school of kyogen. The head family, the Yamawaki Izumi family, traces its origins to Sasaki Gakurakuken, who lived in Sakamoto, Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture) in the mid-Muromachi period, but later became a kyogen performer at Torikai Sarugaku, which was located on the banks of the Yodo River in Settsu Province (Osaka Prefecture). After the troupe's decline, the 7th head of the family, Yamawaki Izuminokami Motoyoshi, who had been active in Kyoto in the early Edo period, established his own style by taking over the Miyake Tokuro and Nomura Matasaburo families, who were also influential kyogen performers in Kyoto. The Yamawaki Izumi and Nomura families received stipends from the Owari Tokugawa clan, and the Miyake family from the Kaga Maeda clan, and both served the Imperial Court, but throughout the Edo period the style was limited to Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Kanazawa, and Kumamoto, where there were disciples of the Nomura family. After the Meiji Restoration, when the capital was moved to Tokyo, many famous families from various regions, including the Miyake Tokuro family and the Yamawaki Izumi family, gathered in Tokyo due to their connection as schools that served the Imperial Court, but many of them lost their successors. The Izumi school in Tokyo is dominated by the eldest son of the 5th Nomura Manzo (retired name Mansai), a disciple of the Miyake family who came up from Kanazawa, the 6th Nomura Manzo, and his second son, the 9th Miyake Tokuro, who took over as his master, and successors from each line are active. In other areas, there is the Kyogen Kyodosha in Nagoya, which preserves the traditions of the Izumi school, and the Hokuriku Kyogen Association in Kanazawa.
