1918‐2004 A Dutch female track and field athlete. In 1936, at the age of 18, she competed in the Berlin Olympics, coming in sixth in the high jump. In 1940, she married her coach, Blankers, and in 1948, at the age of 30 and the mother of two children, she competed in the London Olympics, winning the 100m (11.9 seconds), 200m (24.4 seconds), and 80m hurdles (11.2 seconds), as well as the 400m relay (47.5 seconds) in which she was the final runner, winning four gold medals and earning the nickname "the flying Dutchman."
