Sedimentary facies

Within a group of strata, the strata can be divided into multiple groups of strata that differ in both lithology and paleontology, reflecting the differences in their depositional environments. The characteristics of the same group of strata divided in this way are called sedimentary facies. Even within the same period, a group of strata with one sedimentary facies can be found next to a group of strata with a different sedimentary facies. In general, the boundary between the two groups changes position over time as the depositional environment changes, so the boundary between the sedimentary facies and the time plane intersect obliquely.

ある一群の地層の中で、地層はそれぞれの堆積環境の違いを反映して、岩質的にも古生物的性質としても異なる複数の地層群に分けられる。このように区分された同一の地層群のもつ特徴を堆積相という。同一時期であっても、ある堆積相をもった地層群に隣り合って、別の堆積相をもった地層群が分布する。一般的に両者の境界は、堆積環境の変化に伴って時間とともに位置を変えるため、堆積相の境界と時間面とは斜交する。
