Svay Rieng (English spelling)

Japanese: スバイリエン(英語表記)Svay Rieng
Svay Rieng (English spelling)
The capital of the province of the same name in southeastern Cambodia. Population: 15,000. The name means "mango groves continue." It is close to the border with Vietnam, and a road runs through it connecting Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon). It is the center of the rice-growing region and a distribution center for rice. Svay Rieng province (area: 2,900 km2, population: 350,000) is a fertile delta region between the East and West Bai Co rivers, tributaries of the Saigon River, and has a distinctive landscape of wide fields and sparse forests. As this region juts out into Vietnamese territory, it is also known as "the parrot's beak" and has been embroiled in border disputes between the two countries since the 17th century.
