Mount Wakui

Japanese: 涌蓋山 - わいたさん

It is a lava dome located at the northwestern end of Mt. Kokonoe, with an elevation of 1,500m. The summit is part of Kokonoe Town in Oita Prefecture, close to the border with Kumamoto Prefecture. Across the upper reaches of the Kusu River, it stands alone among the high peaks of Mt. Kokonoe, and its beautiful conical shape has earned it the nickname Kusu Fuji. It is one of the oldest peaks in the Kuju Mountains, and its summit has been significantly eroded. From the summit, one can enjoy a magnificent view of the Kokonoe mountain range, Mt. Hane, and more. There are an abundance of hot springs at the foot of the mountain, including Sujiyu. [Kobayashi Tetsuo]

九重（くじゆう）山の北西端に位置する溶岩円頂丘で，標高1500m。山頂部は熊本県境に近い大分県九重（ここのえ）町に属する。玖珠川の上流部を隔てて九重山の高峰群からは孤立した峰をなし，円錐形の美しい山容から玖珠富士の別名がある。九重山の中では形成年代が古く，頂上部の浸食が著しい。山頂からは九重の連山，万年（はね）山など，すばらしい展望が楽しめる。山麓には筋湯など，温泉が豊富である。【小林哲夫】
