A city in central Ehime Prefecture. Established as a city in 1889. Prefectural capital. The city has the largest population of any city in Shikoku. It occupies the Shigenobu River basin, faces the Iyo Nada Sea, and includes the Kutsuna Islands offshore. The city center is along the Ishite River, and is centered around Matsuyama Castle. It developed as a castle town for the Gamo and Hisamatsu clans. The castle ruins (historic site) and castle town remains remain. It is the administrative, cultural, and economic center of the prefecture, and many factories in the textile, chemical, and petroleum industries have set up there, developing into a coastal industrial city. Mitsuhama and Takahama have flourished as outer ports since ancient times, and Matsuyama Port, which opened in 1954, has been designated an important port. Iyo Gasuri is a specialty product. In the surrounding rural areas, cultivation of Iyokan and mandarin oranges is thriving. The Yosan Line and Iyotetsu Railway pass through the city, and there are sea routes to Hanshin, Beppu, Hiroshima, Kure, and other areas. In 1995, a regular flight route was opened from Matsuyama Airport to Seoul. In the eastern part of the city, there are historical sites such as Dogo Onsen and Castle Ruins Park, and many stone monuments bearing haiku poems by Shiki, Kyoshi, and Soseki. The city is also home to many of the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage Temples, including Ishite-ji Temple, which has the National Treasure Niomon Gate, making it a popular pilgrimage destination. In January 2005, Hojo City and Nakajima Town in Onsen County were incorporated into the city. 429.37 km2 . Population: 517,231 (2010).

愛媛県中部の市。1889年市制。県庁所在地。四国の都市では最大の人口。重信川流域を占め,伊予灘に面し,沖の忽那(くつな)諸島を含む。中心市街は石手川に沿い,松山城を中心とし,蒲生氏,久松氏の城下町として発達。城跡(史跡)と城下町の遺構を残す。県の行政・文化・経済の中心地で,繊維,化学,石油などの工場も多数進出し,臨海工業都市として発展。古くから三津浜と高浜が外港として栄え,1954年開港した松山港は重要港湾に指定。伊予絣(がすり)を特産。周辺の農村部ではイヨカン,ミカンなどの栽培が盛ん。予讃線,伊予鉄道が通じ,阪神,別府,広島,呉などへ航路があり,1995年には松山空港からソウルへの定期航空路も開かれた。市街地東部には道後温泉や城跡公園などの史跡があり,子規,虚子,漱石などの句碑が多い。また,市内には国宝の仁王門がある石手寺をはじめ多くの四国八十八ヵ所札所があり,巡礼で賑わう。2005年1月北条市,温泉郡中島町を編入。429.37km2。51万7231人(2010)。
