The temporary palace of Empress Saimei (Empress Kogyoku). Its formal name was Asakura Tachibana no Hironiwa no Miya, and it was also called Kinomaru Palace, named after the verse "If I am in Asakura or Kinomaru Palace, who is going there proclaiming my name?", which is attributed to Emperor Tenchi in the Shin Kokinshu. In 661 (7th year of the reign of Emperor Saimei), the emperor marched westward to support the restoration of Baekje, and in March he arrived in Naotsu (present-day Minami Ward, Fukuoka City) and stayed in the nearby Iwase temporary palace, but in May he moved to Asakura Palace. According to the Nihon Shoki, the gods became angry when the trees of the Asakura Shrine were cut down to build the palace, and the palace was destroyed. Will-o'-the-wisp appeared in the palace, and many attendants died of illness. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
