An insect of the Hemiptera family, Coccidae family. Also known as the Ibota Roe Bug. It is so named because male larvae gather in groups on the twigs of Ibota to create cattail-like wax masses. They are sexually dimorphic, with adult females being wingless and having almost circular, yellowish brown bodies that become almost spherical and about 1 cm in size when mature, with the skin hardening significantly and becoming dark brown. Males become adults with a pair of wings and emerge from the wax mass. They occur widely throughout Japan, as well as in China, the Korean peninsula, and Europe. In addition to Ibota, they parasitize ash trees, Japanese laurels, and other plants. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
