A Shintoist from the mid-to-late Edo period and a priest at the Ise Naiku Shrine. A native of Ise-Tasuku County. The third son of Kikuya Hyobu Suego. A member of the Masutani clan. Called Genba or Daigaku, his pen names were Sakuraya and Rakusai. In 1775 he became a deputy negi (primary priest) at the Naiku Shrine and attained the rank of Shorokui (senior sixth rank) in the Kazahiki Miyauchinin (fourth rank ... During this time, he was involved in literature, such as compiling his father's anthology of waka and prose, "Kiku no Ieshu" (3 volumes, completed in 1797; the handwritten copy donated by Sueju is housed in the Jingu Bunko collection), but his lifelong ambition was to study the history of Ise Shrine and the deity it enshrined. In 1818 (Bunsei 1), he became a student of Hirata Atsutane. He left behind many books, including "Naiku Geku Benryakukai" (1 volume, copy, colophon 1794).

江戸中期から後期の神道家,伊勢内宮祠官。伊勢度会郡の人。菊屋兵部末偶の第3子。益谷氏。玄蕃または大学と称し,桜屋,楽斎はその号。安永4(1775)年に内宮権禰宜となり,風日祈宮内人正六位に至った。寛政4(1792)年,父同様に本居宣長の門に入り,神祇の研究に専念した。しかし宣長の伊勢両宮に関する祭神説『伊勢二宮さき竹の弁』(1801板)を不服として,師の没後享和3(1803)年に反駁書『伊勢二宮割竹弁難』(1冊,写)を著し,離門。その間,父の和歌和文集『菊の家集』(3巻,1797完成,末寿自筆奉納本は神宮文庫所蔵)を編むなど,文芸に携わる一面もあったが,生涯の志は伊勢神宮の沿革と祭神の考究にあった。文政1(1818)年平田篤胤に入門。『内宮外宮弁略解』(1冊,写,1794奥書)など,多くの著書を残している。
