The world's first steam engine manufacturing company was active during the British Industrial Revolution. It was founded in 1775 as a partnership between J. Watt, the inventor of the steam engine, and Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), a metalworker from Birmingham. The firm initially focused on the design, installation, and consulting of steam engines, outsourcing most of the parts, including cylinders. However, when Watt invented the rotary engine in 1782, which allowed factory engines to be directly powered by rotary power, the range of industries in which users were based expanded, and new users with no experience in machine construction began asking the firm to supply them with all of their engines.

イギリス産業革命期に活躍した世界最初の蒸気機関製造会社。蒸気機関の発明者であるJ.ワットとバーミンガムの金属加工業者ボールトンMatthew Boulton(1728‐1809)との合名会社として1775年設立された。同商会は当初，蒸気機関の設計，設置，コンサルティング業務に専念し，シリンダーをはじめ部品の大部分は外注していた。しかし，82年ワットが回転式機関を発明し，工場の機関に直接回転動力を与えるようになると，ユーザーの業種は拡大し，機械建設に未経験な新しいユーザーは商会に対して機関の一括供給を求めてきた。
