National University Corporation. A new university founded in 1973 as the core institution of Tsukuba Science City, Tokyo University of Education. In October 2002, it merged with the University of Library and Information Science. It abolished the traditional faculties and departments of a university, and established "colleges and departments" as educational organizations for students and "departments" as research organizations for faculty, aiming to differentiate between education and research. There are seven schools to which students belong: School I (Humanities, Sociology, Natural Sciences), School II (Comparative Culture, Japanese Language and Culture, Human Sciences, Biology, Bioresources), School III (Political Science, International Studies, Information Science, Engineering Systems, Engineering Foundations), School of Medicine, School of Physical Education, School of Art, and School of Library and Information Science. In 2007, the Schools of First, Second, and Third Colleges, School of Medicine, and School of Library and Information Science were reorganized to establish the Schools of Humanities and Culture, Social and International Studies, Human Sciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Science and Engineering, Information Science, and Medicine. The Schools of First, Second, and Third Colleges and School of Library and Information Science stopped recruiting students. The faculty members belong to 28 academic departments (Philosophy and Thought, History and Anthropology, Literature and Linguistics, Modern Language and Contemporary Culture, Education, Psychology, Mental and Physical Disability Studies, Social Science, Social Engineering, Biological Science, Agriculture and Forestry, Agricultural and Forestry Engineering, Applied Biochemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Functional Engineering, Electronics and Information Engineering, Physical Education, Arts, Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Social Medicine, Nursing Science, and Library and Information Science). There are eight graduate schools, including the Graduate School of Business Science and the Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies, which aim to train specialists. In addition, the university has 27 educational and research facilities, including the Foreign Language Center, Agriculture and Forestry Technology Center, Center for Interdisciplinary Life Research, and Academic Information and Media Center, to provide educational and research services. In terms of university administration, the university has also implemented new initiatives, such as introducing a vice president system (responsible for education, research, student life, finances, organization, and general affairs) and replacing the traditional faculty council with faculty meetings for each school and department. The university also places emphasis on international exchange and openness, and was one of the first to adopt a recommendation system for student selection. In April 2004, the university became a national university corporation with the enforcement of the National University Corporation Law. Its address is 1-1-1 Tennodai, Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, among other locations. [Toru Magose] "Tsukuba University Ten Year History Research Group, ed.
