A North Korean poet. Born to a poor farmer in Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province. He moved to Siberia at a young age. After graduating from Gorki University of Education in Omsk, he taught at the Korean Normal University in Kshir-Orta in Central Asia while writing poetry. In August 1945, he joined the struggle for the liberation of his homeland. He wrote poetry while editing the Chosun Shinmun. In addition to short poems such as Song of the Earth (1946) on the theme of land reform, his works include the epic poem Mt. Paektu (1947), which depicts the struggle of Kim Il-sung and other anti-Japanese partisans, Song of Life (1950), which reflects the new life of workers, and the syllable series Fighting Yeosu (1948), which deals with the Yeosu incident. In March 1951, he was elected vice-chairman of the General Union of Korean Literature and Art, but was killed in battle in October of the same year.
