Darmstadt (English spelling)
A city in the state of Hesse in central Germany. It is located about 30 km south of Frankfurt am Main, near the Odenwald on the eastern edge of the Rhine Graben. It obtained city rights in 1330. In 1479 it became the County of Hesse, and in 1567 it became the residence of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt. The family became Grand Dukes in 1806, and the city flourished in the early 19th century, with well-planned urban development. Industrialization also began in the 19th century, and the city was home to industries such as machinery, tempered glass, television, printing, and chemicals. It also has a technical university and an industrial design institute. In 1899, Archduke E. Ludwig founded an artists' village on the hill Mathildenhöhe on the western outskirts of the city. The city has the castle of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt (1568-95), a Russian cathedral (1898-99), and a state museum. Population: 143,332 (2010).

ドイツ中部,ヘッセン州の都市。フランクフルトアムマインの南約 30km,ライン地溝帯の東縁,オーデンワルト近くに位置する。 1330年に都市権を獲得。 1479年ヘッセン地方伯領,1567年にヘッセン=ダルムシュタット家の居地となった。同家は 1806年に大公となり,市も 19世紀初頭に繁栄をきわめ,計画的な都市づくりが行われた。工業化も 19世紀に始ったが,機械,強化ガラス,テレビ,印刷,化学などの工業が盛んで,工科大学,工業デザイン研究所も設置されている。市の西郊の丘,マティルデンヘーエには,99年,E.ルートウィヒ大公によって芸術家の村が創設された。ヘッセン=ダルムシュタット家の城館 (1568~95) ,ロシア聖堂 (1898~99) ,州立博物館などがある。人口 14万3332(2010)。
