A city in the state of Hesse in central Germany. It is located about 30 km south of Frankfurt am Main, near the Odenwald on the eastern edge of the Rhine Graben. It obtained city rights in 1330. In 1479 it became the County of Hesse, and in 1567 it became the residence of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt. The family became Grand Dukes in 1806, and the city flourished in the early 19th century, with well-planned urban development. Industrialization also began in the 19th century, and the city was home to industries such as machinery, tempered glass, television, printing, and chemicals. It also has a technical university and an industrial design institute. In 1899, Archduke E. Ludwig founded an artists' village on the hill Mathildenhöhe on the western outskirts of the city. The city has the castle of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt (1568-95), a Russian cathedral (1898-99), and a state museum. Population: 143,332 (2010).
