...However, the cuttings scattered with the compressed air caused silicosis among miners, so they soon improved the method to remove the cuttings by passing water instead of compressed air. This type of rock drill was called the Water Liner, and was imported to the Ashio Mine in Japan in 1902. The manufacture of rock drills in Japan began in 1914, when the patent for the liner expired.
