1923‐ Senegalese writer and film director. Born in Ziguinchor, the son of a fisherman, he served in World War II as a Senegalese sniper in the French army. In 1948 he moved to Marseille and participated in the longshoremen's union movement as a dockside laborer. In 1956 he published his autobiographical novel, The Black Stevedore, in French. Since then he has prided himself on being a modern-day griot (storyteller) and has been active as a socially conscious writer. His novels include The Trees of the Gods (1960), which was based on the 1947 Dakar-Niger railway strike, and Exchange (1966), which depicts the sorrow of ordinary people who are deceived because they are illiterate.
