Shokoshisou - Ancient Thought

Japanese: 尚古思想 - しょうこしそう

A dominant ideology in China that holds that a valuable life can be found in the ancient times and that models itself on ancient cultural artifacts and systems. The ancient period refers mainly to the period described in the Confucian classics, the Five Classics, that is, the three dynasties of Xia, Yin, and Zhou. The term "respect for the ancient" itself appears in the New Book of Tang and is relatively new, but the idea is found in Confucian classics such as "do not state or invent, but believe in and prefer the ancient" (The Analects of Confucius) and "follow the ancient teachings" (The Book of Songs). The classics also had the status of eternal and unchanging "unpublished books."

価値ある生活は古代にあるとして，古代の文物･制度を模範とする中国の支配的な思想。古代というのは儒家の経典〈五経〉に描かれた時代，つまり夏，殷，周の3代を主として対象とする。〈尚古〉ということば自身は，《新唐書》に見え比較的新しいものであるが，その思想は〈述べて作らず，信じて古を好む〉(《論語》)，〈古き訓（おしえ）に是れ式（のつと）る〉(《詩経》)をはじめ儒家の経典に散見する。またその経典は永久不変のもの〈不刊之書〉としての地位をもっていた。
