Born: August 31, 1922, Tokyo [Died] July 17, 2006. Pharmacologist, Okazaki, Aichi. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Tokyo Imperial University in 1944. Served as a visiting researcher at the Rockefeller Institute in the United States in 1959, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tokyo in the same year, a visiting professor at the University of California in 1963, a professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo in 1971, and a visiting professor at the Harvard Medical School in 1974. After retiring from the University of Tokyo in 1983, he served as a professor, director, and director of the National Institute for Physiological Sciences, Okazaki National Research Institute. In his research on the molecular physiological mechanism of muscle contraction, he discovered the role of calcium as a regulatory factor and elucidated its regulatory mechanism. He also revealed the existence of troponin as a calcium receptor protein and elucidated its role (1965). He further expanded his research field to other physiological processes involving calcium. He also discovered that creatine phosphokinase activity in the serum of patients with muscular dystrophy was extremely high, and based on this, he laid the foundation for a method to detect latent muscular dystrophy. He received the Imperial Prize of the Academy in 1972, the International Prize for Biology in 1999, and the Order of Culture in 1975.
