Aqueous solution of hydrogen iodide. Pure solutions are colorless, but they often decompose in light due to dissolved oxygen, liberating iodine, turning brown. It is stable even in light if it is blocked from light or oxygen is completely removed. Colored hydroiodic acid can be distilled with the addition of phosphinic acid to return to a colorless solution. I ₂ + HPH ₂ O ₂ + H ₂ O― → 2HI + H ₂ PHO _3It is a strong acid, and a concentrated solution will smoke in moist air. In solution, it is virtually completely dissociated into H ⁺ and I ^- .

ヨウ化水素の水溶液。純粋な溶液は無色だが，しばしば溶存酸素のため光により分解し，ヨウ素を遊離するので，褐色に着色する。光を遮断し，あるいは酸素を完全に除去すれば光の中でも安定である。着色したヨウ化水素酸はホスフィン酸を加えて蒸留すれば再び無色の溶液が得られる。　I₂＋HPH₂O₂＋H₂O―→2HI＋H₂PHO₃強い酸性を示し，濃厚な溶液は湿った空気中で発煙する。溶液中では事実上完全にH^＋とI^－とに解離する。
