In the same year, a guild revolt broke out in Africa, but he dispatched his brother Mascezel to suppress it the following year. In the autumn of 401, when Alaric, who had been embraced by the Eastern Roman Empire, invaded Italy, he withdrew his troops from Britain and Gaul to defend Italy, forcing the Visigoths to retreat in the battles of Pollentia (402) and Bellona (403). In 406, he annihilated the Germanic mixed army led by Radagaisus, who had invaded Italy the previous year, at Faesulae.
