A general term for dolls made from beeswax or animal wax. It often refers to life-size, painted, and elaborate figures intended for public exhibition. The use of wax to make statues of gods and death masks dates back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. During the Renaissance, the cire perdue (a type of casting technique) was perfected, and from the 16th and 17th centuries onwards, the production of wax portrait medals and painted wax reliefs became popular, and wax sculptures became widely used.
