Prince Taruhito

Japanese: 熾仁親王 - たるひとしんのう

A member of the imperial family from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period. The 9th head of the Arisugawanomiya family. At the end of the Edo period, he was supported by the Sonno Joi faction and served as an official in charge of national affairs. After the restoration of imperial rule, he became the president of the new government, and during the Boshin War, he served in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi as the Grand Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern Expeditionary Army. During the Seinan War, he commanded the army and navy as the Expeditionary Commander-in-Chief, and was commissioned an army general after the war. He served as Chief of Staff in the Sino-Japanese War, but died of illness in the midst of the war.

幕末〜明治前期の皇族。有栖川宮(ありすがわのみや)家９世。幕末には尊攘(そんじょう)派に擁立されて国事御用掛を務める。王政復古後は新政府の総裁職に就き，戊辰戦争では東征軍大総督として鳥羽・伏見の戦などに出陣。西南戦争に征討総督として陸海軍を指揮し，戦争後に陸軍大将に任官。日清戦争に参謀総長として臨むが，戦争のさなか病没。
