Sakai Kurai

Japanese: 阪井久良伎 - さかいくらき
Sakai Kurai

Senryu (Japanese senryu) writer. Also written as Kuraki. His real name was Sakai Wakachi. He was also known by the pseudonyms Tsurezurebo and Henatuchi. He was born in Yokohama (Kuraki County, Musashi Province). He became a student of the Japanese scholar Watanabe Ikarimaro. He was active as a poet at first, and then he formed the Henatuchi Society, a group of poets that satirized Shinpa waka poetry. Later, influenced by Masaoka Shiki, he was the first to speak out in the revolution of senryu based on the Denpo Shimbun, and published Senryu Kougai and Senryu Kuraki Ten, as well as the journal Satsukigoi, and popularized social literary senryu as "new manners and customs poetry." Many old senryu scholars came from his school. He is buried in Aoyama Cemetery, Tokyo.
