A city in central Hokkaido. It was incorporated as a city in 1966. It occupies the southern part of the Furano Basin and the surrounding mountainous areas. The Nemuro Main Line runs through the city, and the Furano Line branches off from it. The flat land along the Sorachi River, which flows north in the west, is used as rice paddies, and the plateaus and hills are also used as fields. Rice, onions, asparagus, grapes, lavender, carrots, and other crops are produced in the city, and dairy cows and pigs are also raised there. There is a city-run wine factory.
