...It is a disease that has been known in China since before the Common Era, characterized by periodic chills and fevers that occur every one or two days. It is said to be caused by external evils such as summer colds and bad air in the mountains, and many names for the disease are listed, such as damp malaria, malaria, and miasma. Other diseases may have been included, but the main cause is thought to be malaria.
