1694‐1757 French politician. Born to a Minister of the Great Seal, he was a classmate of Voltaire at the École Louis-le-Grand and formed a lifelong friendship with him. He entered politics at a young age and was appointed a Counsellor of the Council of State in 1720. In 1733 he became an honorary member of the Academie des Inscriptions, and was one of the most enthusiastic members of the Mezzanine Club during its existence, and his most famous work, Treatise on the French Government (1764), was conceived at the club. In 1744 he became Minister of Foreign Affairs during the War of the Austrian Succession, and promoted anti-Austrian policies. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
