French politician. Born to a Minister of the Great Seal, he was a classmate of Voltaire at the École Louis-le-Grand and formed a lifelong friendship with him. He entered politics at a young age and was appointed a Counsellor of the Council of State in 1720. In 1733 he became an honorary member of the Academie des Inscriptions, and was one of the most enthusiastic members of the Mezzanine Club during its existence, and his most famous work, Treatise on the French Government (1764), was conceived at the club. In 1744 he became Minister of Foreign Affairs during the War of the Austrian Succession, and promoted anti-Austrian policies.

フランスの政治家。国璽尚書を父として生まれ，ルイ･ル･グラン校ではボルテールと同級で生涯にわたる親交を結んだ。若くして政界入りを果たし，1720年には国務院評定官に任命される。33年に碑銘アカデミー名誉会員となり，また〈中二階クラブ〉存続中はもっとも熱心な常連で，彼の代表作《フランス政体論》(1764)は同クラブで構想されたものである。オーストリア継承戦争下の44年外務大臣となり，反オーストリア政策を推進した。
