A city in the southern tip of Texas, United States. It is located on the north bank of the Rio Grande River, 35 km upstream from the mouth of the river, facing Matamoros, Mexico. It began as a fort built in 1846 to protect against attacks by the Mexican army. In May 1865, the final battle of the American Civil War took place at nearby Palmito Ranch. The current city was built in the 20th century. Cotton, grains, and vegetables are produced in the surrounding area. The port handles a lot of shrimp, bananas, pineapples, coconuts, and cotton. There are petrochemical and aircraft repair factories, and more than half of the residents are Hispanic.
