The chemical formula is (HPO ₃ ) _n . Due to its shape, it is also called glass phosphoric acid or glacial phosphoric acid. It is present in microorganisms and insects, and is thought to supply the phosphorus necessary for nucleic acid synthesis in cells. Those with n = 3 and 4 are the most important, and are commonly known as trimetaphosphate and tetrametaphosphate, but the correct names are cyclo-triphosphate and cyclo-tetraphosphate. In other words, the condensation of PO ₄ ^3- forms a ring. Those with n = 5, 6, 7, etc. have also been isolated.

化学式(HPO₃)_n。その形状から，ガラス状リン酸，氷状リン酸とも呼ばれる。微生物，昆虫類などに存在し，細胞中での核酸合成に必要なリンを供給していると考えられている。n＝3,4のものが最も重要で，三メタリン酸，四メタリン酸などと俗称されるが，正しくはcyclo‐三リン酸，cyclo‐四リン酸という。すなわちPO₄^3－の縮合のしかたが環状となっているのである。n＝5,6,7などのものも分離されている。
