The chemical formula is (HPO 3 ) n . Due to its shape, it is also called glass phosphoric acid or glacial phosphoric acid. It is present in microorganisms and insects, and is thought to supply the phosphorus necessary for nucleic acid synthesis in cells. Those with n = 3 and 4 are the most important, and are commonly known as trimetaphosphate and tetrametaphosphate, but the correct names are cyclo-triphosphate and cyclo-tetraphosphate. In other words, the condensation of PO 4 3- forms a ring. Those with n = 5, 6, 7, etc. have also been isolated. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
