The capital of Georgia, located in the northwest of the state. Population 416,474 (2000). Located at the foot of the southwestern end of the Appalachian Mountains, it is the commercial, financial and transportation center of the southeastern United States. 429 of the 500 largest companies in the United States according to Fortune magazine have offices in Atlanta. Many banks and insurance companies are also concentrated in the city, including the Federal Reserve Bank of the Sixth District. Hartsfield-Atlanta International Airport is connected to the city center by subway, and is the second busiest airport in the United States in terms of annual passenger numbers. Industries include textiles, furniture, chemicals, glass, lumber, steel, leather products, electrical machinery, aluminum, flour milling and automobiles.

In 1833, the first settlers settled on the land of the Native Americans, the Creeks, and in 1837, the town was built as the terminus of the railroad from Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was called Terminus. In 1843, it was renamed Marthasville, and in 1845, it was incorporated as a city and named Atlanta. During the Civil War, it was an important city for railroads, commerce, communication, and supply in the South. In 1864, it was captured by General Sherman of the Union Army, and most of the city was burned. After the Civil War, it was quickly rebuilt, and Atlanta became famous by hosting expositions, trade fairs, and various conferences. It was the setting for Gone with the Wind, and has a beautiful residential area with dogwood trees in bloom. The state capitol, city hall, state archives, the Cyclorama Museum in Grant Park, Underground Atlanta, and the grave of Martin Luther King, Jr. are some of the tourist attractions. The city hosted the 1996 Olympic Games.
