A seaweed of the family Doliaceae in the order Dolichos, red algae. It grows on rocks from the lower intertidal zone to deeper. Its shape is highly variable, but it is leaf-like, thin-membranous, and branched simply or irregularly. When old, it may become thick and leathery. This seaweed is edible in Ireland and Scotland. It is found in Hokkaido and the northern Pacific coast of Japan, Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, the west coast of the United States, Australia, Polynesia, and also in the Atlantic Ocean. 紅藻類ダルス目ダルス科の海藻。潮間帯の下部からさらに深い岩上に生じる。形はきわめて変化に富むが,葉状,薄い膜質で,単条もしくは不規則に叉状分岐する。古いものでは厚くなり革質になることもある。この海藻はアイルランドやスコットランドでは食用にされている。日本の北海道および太平洋岸北部,サハリン,千島,アメリカ西岸,オーストラリア,ポリネシアに分布し,大西洋にも生育する。
