The name of cellulose obtained by soaking cellulose fibers (mainly chemical pulp) in a 17.5% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and washing the insoluble parts with water. Cellulose is a polysaccharide that makes up the cell membranes of higher plants and is a polymer of glucose (dextrose). Cotton cellulose contains only small amounts of impurities, so they can be easily removed. Wood cellulose is tightly bound to hemicellulose and lignin, which are polymers of sugars other than glucose, and a process similar to that used in chemical pulp manufacturing is required to remove them.
