...Various shapes, such as bell-shaped and oval, became popular, and simplified versions of the panniers spread among the general public, and continued to be used as court attire until just before the French Revolution. In particular, in the mid-18th century, the "panier double" appeared, which was designed to have two panniers attached to both sides of the waist and fastened to the waist with a string at the top. It protruded so far to the left and right of the body that it was impossible to pass through a door without lying down. Furthermore, a pannier that could be folded up like a carriage hood also appeared.
