A city in the northwestern part of the Nile Delta in northern Egypt. Capital of the Buhaira Governorate. Located west of the Rashid tributary, it is connected by railroad, road and canal to Cairo and Alexandria. In ancient Egypt it was called the "City of Horus" and in the Hellenistic period it was known as Hermopolis Parba. During the Fatimid period it became a provincial capital and in the Middle Ages it flourished as a caravan town. Today it is the center of the western part of the Delta and a trading centre for cotton, dates and vegetables. It has a thriving cotton textile industry. Population: 225,900 (1986 estimate).
