A region along the Baltic Sea, spanning Germany and Poland. Its German name is Pommern, and its English name is Pomerania. Historically, it was the site of territorial disputes between Poland and Germany. It is divided into Eastern Pomerania, centered around Gdansk, and Western Pomerania, centered around Szczecin. Slavs settled there from the 5th century. In the 12th century, it was Christianized and Germanized. It later became part of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1648, it was divided into Sweden and Brandenburg by the Treaty of Westphalia, but eventually became part of Prussia, and after World War II, it was divided into Germany (then East Germany) and Poland.
