A poet of the early Heian period. Compiler of the Kokin Wakashu. One of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. Son of Aritomo. In 897 (Kanpei 9), he became Tosa no Jo, the following year Shonaiki, and in 904 (Engi 4), Onaiki. He died during the compilation of the Kokinshu. He is the third most collected poet with 46 poems. He left behind a significant number of poems in the Koresada no Miko no Ie no Utaawase (Poetry Contest of Prince Koresada's Household) and Kanpyo no Onto Tokikisai no Miya no Utaawase (Poetry Contest of the Kanpyo Imperial Court) as early as 892, and through the Shinsen Manyoshu, he was the most influential poet of the period immediately before the compilation of the Kokinshu. He is highly regarded as a poet who directly led the Kokinshu with his gentle and elegant style of poetry that is witty yet lyrical.
